[If you or someone you love had had a C-section, please read this...]
Back in December my boyfriend Casey ruptured his inferior patellar tendon and had surgery. Since then he's had multiple follow-up appointments with the surgeon, bi-weekly physiotherapy/physical therapy sessions, and "homework" to do in between his PT appointments. He has been advised to approach movement and exercise with great caution and be very slow in the progression of what he is allowed to do. wedding selections with long sleeve on sale
During ... this time, I've been working diligently on our upcoming Moms Gone Strong program (and reading through your comments and questions in our closed Moms Facebook group) and it has me thinking a lots about women who have C-sections, and how little information they are given healing, and specifically about returning to exercise post C-section.
So many women are told something to the effect of, "Don't lift anything, don't drive, and don't exercise for six weeks and you'll be fine."
WAIT WHAT!?
You just had MAJOR abdominal surgery and you're supposed to wait six weeks for the top layer of tissue to heal, and you're good to go?
- What about seeing a women's health physiotherapist/physical therapist to monitor your recovery?
- What about moving your body and caring for your child(ren) those first 6 weeks? Any guidance there?
- What about progressing your return to exercise intelligently?
It's absolutely CRAZY that women who have C-sections don't get the same care and treatment that someone who has knee surgery gets.
But at this point, most of them don't -- which is why I LOVE this article from GGS advisory board member Jessie Mundell.
In this article she details tons of important information about returning to exercises safely post c-section (yes, you can start doing some of the breathing exercises within days of your surgery if you're feeling good!) including finding a women's health physiotherapist/physical therapist in your area.
Give it a read and if you think any of your friends or family members may find it helpful, please don't hesitate to share.
Women DESERVE better information about how to care for themselves after having a baby, period. But especially after having a C-section.
